Let’s Talk Framing
When thinking about commissioning a painting, it is important to consider how you want the painting to look on your wall. Do you prefer a floater frame or something more antique? Do you want something bright or modern? Maybe you’d like the edges of your canvas to be visible and painted with a design, or for your painting to “spill out” over the edges of the canvas. This post is to help you consider your options as you start to envision your new painting.
Natural wood floater frame
I personally love this options and think it is best value if you like the look. To keep your costs to a minimum, I use this company. They sell the frame and canvas together at a great price, and it comes with all the shipping and packaging materials I need to send it your way, so costs are cut in many places. I can also dye the natural wood any color. ($$-$$$)Hand-stretched framed canvas
This option involves more manual labor for the framer, resulting in a higher cost, but yields a nice final product and offers more control over frame options, especially if you have something custom or vintage in mind. I know a nice, low cost, second hand framer in Austin that is a great option if you want to go this route. She sources antique and second hand frames so costs remain relatively low. We can also go a more custom route, if you have strong ideas on what you want the frame to look like. ($$$-$$$$)
canvas with no frame
This is a great option if you're looking to keep your costs low, as there is no added costs for framing. I'll install d-rings and a wire on the back of your canvas so it will be ready to hang on your wall. I typically like to paint the sides of the canvas in a color that makes the painting pop, as seen on Converse Cowboy and Leave the Light On. ($-$$)Framed Panel or linen sheet
This is a great option if you want an antique or custom frame for a lower cost. The materials cost for panels and linen sheets are lower than a stretched canvas, and they are relatively easy to frame. ($-$$)If you have an idea that isn’t listed above, I am all ears!
